The first monsoon rain in Odisha is more than just weather. It is an event. Streets that were dusty a week ago suddenly smell of wet earth. Children run out to get drenched, despite mothers shouting from the verandah. Farmers look at their fields with quiet relief.

Inside homes, kitchens come alive with pithas and fried snacks. Chakuli pitha with aloo tarkari, bara, pakodi, mudhi with spicy mixture – everyone has their favourite monsoon companion. Rains also change the soundscape. The continuous patter on asbestos roofs, the distant thunder, the humming of old ceiling fans – together they create a background music that no app can imitate.

For many Odias living away from home, monsoon memories can be deeply emotional: holding an umbrella with a friend while walking to tuition, long bus rides with foggy windows, power cuts that led to candlelit storytelling. Odisha in the rain is green, slightly chaotic, but incredibly beautiful.

If you ever get a chance, visit a small town or village in Odisha during monsoon. Sit near a window with a plate of hot pithas and just watch the world turn softer, slower and greener.
